What is the botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a potent natural toxin that inhibits the release of acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter responsible for transmitting signals between nerves and muscles. The toxin prevents the affected muscle from contracting.

Botulinum toxin is used to remove wrinkles, but also to treat various conditions such as strabismus, neurological disorders involving excessive muscle tension, and excessive sweating. To eliminate expression lines, very low concentrations of the toxin are used, which do not affect other parts of the nervous system beyond the area where the injection was administered.

What does a botulinum toxin treatment involve?

Botulinum toxin is injected using a disposable syringe fitted with a very fine needle. A small amount of the product is precisely injected into several areas of the face. The procedure is brief. Depending on the number of areas treated (injection sites), it takes around 15–30 minutes. The pain associated with the injection is minimal. The procedure does not require local anaesthesia. For the patient’s comfort, a numbing cream is sometimes applied before the procedure.
