Videodermatoscopy

Videodermatoscopy and dermatoscopy are examinations of skin birthmarks, including pigmented lesions, i.e., moles.

These are the safest and most accurate diagnostic tests, and at the same they are painless. It takes only a few minutes to detect, among others, melanoma (skin cancer) at an early stage of development.

Videodermatoscopy – what does the examination look like?

Before starting the examination, the doctor interviews the patient. He asks if any skin lesions raise his concern and whether the patient is at increased risk of developing skin melanomas (e.g., family history of melanomas, use of a solarium, sunburn). Then, disturbing discoloration and moles are examined under high magnification with the help of a videodermatoscope, which looks like a flashlight with a magnifying glass. It allows enlarging the examined area several times. The built-in side lighting also enables you to gain a “three-dimensional image” of the skin. The obtained photos can be easily stored and made based on comparative research over the years.

Duration 15 to 20 minutes
Comfort A comfortable treatment performed in a sitting or standing position

Why is it necessary to examine moles with a videodermatoscope?

Dermoscopy and videodermatoscopy aim to distinguish benign from malignant lesions and determine whether the nevus requires surgical excision. The dermatoscope examination should be performed every year, preferably in autumn or winter. Regular checkups are especially recommended for people frequently exposed to sun exposure and tend to develop new moles. In addition, people who have a new birthmark should report it to a dermatologist for a dermatoscope examination as soon as possible, proliferating, peeling, bleeding, itching, irregular edges, uneven color, and changing quickly. Other worrying symptoms are oozing from the mole, redness around it, swelling, and pain.

It is worth undergoing this examination because videodermatoscopy is a very effective diagnosis. It is non-invasive, giving up to a 95% chance of early detection of malignant melanoma.
